THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF MUSKEGON COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS:

J. Paul Dunworth Scholarship

Your scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of J. Paul Dunworth, who established the J. Paul Dunworth Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. J. Paul Dunworth taught at Muskegon Public Schools for 40 years. While he never married, he loved Muskegon, which had been his home since 1926. When Mr. Dunworth died in 1981, he left his entire estate to the Community Foundation. Following his death, the contents of his safe deposit box revealed various letters from Robert Kennedy and hundreds of John F. Kennedy five-cent postage commemorative stamps. On the stamps read the statement: "And the glow from that fire can truly light the world.”  J. Paul Dunworth lived by these words, evidenced by his charitable donation that will continue to grant the permanent gift of education to students in Muskegon County.

Jack DeLong, $1,500

Nia Merriweather, $6,000

Hazel Vaca Rodriguez, $1,500

Kenneth Erickson Scholarship

Your scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Marguerite Winter and Marilyn Lynn, who established the Kenneth Erickson Auto Mechanic Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Kenneth Erickson was born at the end of the pre-car era. His father, a rural mail carrier, delivered mail by horse and buggy. When cars came along young Kenneth was fascinated by them and scavenged parts to build a yellow roadster, which he drove for several years. After a short stint at Continental Motors he decided to follow his passion and got a job as an auto mechanic. Eventually he opened his own business, Erickson's Garage, on Center Street in North Muskegon where he sold gas and repaired cars and trucks for over forty years. In establishing the Kenneth I. Erickson Automobile Mechanic Scholarship, Ken's daughters, Marilyn Lynn and Marguerite Winter hope to support young people who would like to turn their passion for cars and motors into a life's work.

Recipient: Jazmine Bennett, $1,200

John and Mary Schumann Scholarship

Your scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of Mary and John Schumann, who created the John and Mary Schumann Scholarship of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Mary Schumann spent her entire life in Muskegon.  She grew up in the 6th Street/St. Michael’s Church neighborhood where her family owned the 6th Street Market and where she came to appreciate the importance of community.  She married John Schumann, Jr., one of the founders of Michigan Spring Company.  In 1986, John and Mary created a Scholarship Fund for the children of company employees.  Mary was employed most of her life at Kieler's Food Market, a family-owned business. The Schumann’s shared the desire to create a lasting contribution to the community they call home. They had no children, and wanted to help the youth of Muskegon. This motivation manifested itself in the creation of the John and Mary Schumann Scholarship.  To the credit of the Schumann’s and their generosity many Muskegon youth will feel Schumann's contribution through the lasting gift of education.

THE EDWARD GOULET SCHOLARSHIP:

A scholarship specifically for Muskegon Catholic Central graduates was generously created last year.  It’s called the Edward Goulet Scholarship.  The donor, Marjorie  (pronounced “More”) Mohrer, is a 1956 Muskegon Catholic Central Graduate.  Upon graduation, she received a tuition scholarship that helped her attend Aquinas College and become a teacher, which she did for thirty-five years.  Without that tuition help, she says that she might not have been able to attend college.  As a way of “paying back” and also as a way to honor her father, she created the Edward Goulet Scholarship.  Mr. Goulet was a ranger at Hoffmaster Park and a classroom visiting Nature Studies teacher for the Muskegon Conservation Club for many years.  He would have encouraged young people to pursue science and/or environmental studies, and so this scholarship is awarded to students seeking that type of higher education.
